Serving vulnerable communities for 54 years, Buckelew Programs is the North Bay’s largest nonprofit provider of behavioral health and substance use treatment services. We deliver direct services to over 3,000 individuals annually in Marin, Sonoma and Napa counties. In addition, Buckelew responds to over 15,000 callers in our accredited Suicide Prevention Hotline from Marin, Sonoma, Lake and Mendocino counties – part of the national 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline. Our services include counseling, substance use recovery, suicide prevention, service navigation and supported housing. Buckelew has an important mission and story to tell, and that’s where you come in.


About You:

You are an experienced, dynamic, creative, self-motivated and strategic Marketing and Communications Director who will play a pivotal role in supporting Buckelew Programs’ growth by expanding our visibility to diverse audiences and increasing community engagement. Reporting to the Chief Philanthropy Officer (CPO) and working closely with the Development Team, you’ll be responsible for amplifying Buckelew’s programs, expertise, and stories – the impact Buckelew has on client lives and community wellness – while supporting fundraising campaigns and community-building among potential partners.

You have a collaborative nature and demonstrated strong writing and interpersonal skills to represent Buckelew Programs externally and the Development Team internally. You are eager to understand Buckelew Programs’ history, services and vision and can articulate our mission in the context of today’s mental health crisis and substance use epidemic.

Responsibilities Include:

  • With support of the CPO, developing and implementing short-term and long-term marketing plans that align with Buckelew’s strategic vision and development efforts
  • Developing and managing the annual communications plan and calendar to foster pro-active messaging throughout the year, including opportunities such as Suicide Awareness Month, Recovery Awareness Month, National Mental Health Month and Buckelew’s annual signature event (the last two are in May)
  • Collaborating with the Director of Institutional Giving to develop and craft content that tells the story of our work, our clients’ journeys, and our impact
  • Regularly connecting in person and virtually with program staff to understand their work and clients’ journeys so you can best tell Buckelew’s impact
  • Developing and managing (drafting, proofreading, editing, sourcing visuals, formatting) content including but not limited to:
    • External collateral and materials such as brochures and informational presentations.
    • Annual impact report
    • Fundraising appeal campaigns (digital and print)
    • Social media
    • Press releases
    • Monthly newsletter
    • Website content
    • Internal communications documents, messaging and presentations by the CEO and People department
  • Managing brand consistency across all communication channels, ensuring a unified visual identity and voice for the organization. This includes developing toolkits to internal teams to maintain brand integrity and alignment
  • Oversight and management of website so viewing experience is relevant and effective for all external audiences (clients, donors, info seekers, etc.) and Buckelew staff
  • Engaging and overseeing the work of relevant consultants that support our marketing, communications and public relations efforts. Depending on the project, this might include a graphic designer, social media specialist, PR/media relations consultant, and/or event planner
  • Monitoring online engagement analytics (web, email, social media, earned media). Leveraging these key engagement metrics to optimize content, messaging and distributions. And supporting the CPO by providing relevant monthly reports and projections for planning and presentation purposes
  • Actively participate as a collaborative and supportive team member in raising funds and awareness for Buckelew Programs
  • Position is full-time and hybrid optional

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field, or equivalent experience
  • Minimum of 3 to 5 years nonprofit experience in marketing/communications
  • Experience managing digital marketing that include social media, website and digital content
  • Familiarity with behavioral health and/or healthcare sector is a plus


Professional Skills and Abilities:

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills; ability to write clear, structured, articulate and engaging content for multiple mediums
  • Superb editing and proofreading skills
  • Knowledge and abilities required to apply specific technical principles and information for this position that include: current social media platforms, MS Office Suite, WordPress or equivalent
  • Knowledge of fundraising information sources, basic fundraising techniques and strategies
  • Strong organizational skills and able to effectively prioritize multiple tasks and responsibilities while advancing the primary departmental and organizational goal
  • Applicant must have a valid driver’s license, automobile insurance, and a functioning car for use on the job


Physical requirements:

  • Ability to attend on site meetings, visit programs and meet with relevant constituents
  • Remote work schedule to be discussed with CPO
  • Requires occasional lifting (up to 25 pounds); standing, walking, reaching, talking and hearing for most of a shift
